The National Association of Artists Organizations (NAAO) is fiscal agent
for the CAE Trial Fund and the CAE Defense Fund*
URGENT – CAE TRIAL FUND NEEDS YOUR HELP!
We must raise at least $60,000 in the next 6 months
to defeat the DoJ’s abuse of power in this precedent-setting
case!
Without the efforts of thousands of people who raised the
money to pay the legal bills and created the media surrounding
this case, Dr. Steven Kurtz would probably be in jail today
awaiting trial.
Currently the CAE Defense Committee, in consultation
with the defense attorneys, estimates we are at least $60,000
short of being able to pay Professor Kurtz’s legal
fees through trial.
Estimated costs of the trial include hiring an attorney
who specializes in biosecurity and safety to serve as an
advisor to Dr. Kurtz’s attorneys, and covering the
travel costs of expert witnesses in the fields of molecular
biology and microbiology who will testify in court about
laboratory safety procedures, and of art historians, curators
and critics who will testify to the cultural legitimacy of
CAE’s work.
These expert witnesses and attorneys are critical
to Professor Kurtz’s defense – therefore, please
consider contributing to the CAE Trial Fund!

*The CAE Defense Fund was the first fund set up in 2004 exclusively
to pay the defense lawyers of Drs. Kurtz and Ferrell, as
well as those of colleagues and associates subpoenaed by
the grand jury in connection with this case. As we near trial, however,
we have been advised to establish a second fund: The CAE TRIAL FUND will
be used to cover future attorneys fees, as well as the other legal expenses
necessary to mounting a vigorous defense. These include covering the
travel costs of expert witnesses in the arts and sciences who will testify
in court.
